Proposed Regulations Changes for Northern Pike & Musky
Public meetings are being held throughout the state to discuss proposed regulation changes for these 2 Michigan sport fish. The new proposals would go into effect April 1st.
For Northern Pike:
- On Michigan waters* that currently have 5 fish daily limits, there will be an added regulation where only one fish can be larger than 24 inches.
- On Michigan waters* that have the 24 to 34 inch slot limit (not allowed to keep), there will be possession limits added – a 2 fish daily limit of fish that are under 24 inches and greater than 34 inches.
- On Michigan waters* with 30 inch size limits, it appears that the 2 fish limit is being lifted.
*To find Michigan waters in each category – see page 18 of the 2013 Michigan Fishing Guide.
- The changes to musky regulations appear to be more severe. Currently there is a 42 inch minimum size limit with a 1 fish daily possession limit – Statewide. The proposed change will limit possession to 1 fish per angler per year and a free muskellunge harvest tag will be required.
